Anti-Snoring Device

The treatment of snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea with an oral appliance is safe, painless, and effective.

Causes of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea

During normal breathing, the air is drawn in through the nose and past soft tissues at the back of the throat. During waking hours the airways are held open by the tone of the muscles around them. During sleep these muscles relax. Sometimes these tissues can relax too much leading to obstruction of the airways. The obstruction can be complete or just partial.

Oral Appliances

Dental oral appliances use a device fitted in the mouth to prevent the airways collapsing during sleep. This is usually achieved by repositioning the lower jaw, holding it forward. The appliance helps to keep the airway open by:

  • Bringing the jaw forward, or
  • Lifting up the soft palate, or
  • Holding the tongue forward.

Some appliances will use a combination of these methods.

At The Dental Centre we use MDSA appliances to overcome snoring and sleep apnoea. The MDSA concept was designed in conjunction with Australia’s leading Dentists, Sleep Physicians and Dental Technician’s.
